Increase Of Racism In The EU

Increase Of Racism In The EU Flag of Europe

Bruxelles – A recent study of The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (FRA) shows an increase of racism and xenophobia in the countries of the European Union.

This worrying data proves that there are more racist based incidents in some countries such as Denmark, Germany, France, Ireland, Poland, Slovakia, Great Britain and Finland, than before. In other countries, the fundamental rights against discrimination don’t even exist so victims of ethnic discrimination can’t get compensation money. Cyprus, Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal haven’t even informed the EU about their opinion on the subject.

“There is undoubted proof that violence and discrimination are increasing in some countries of the EU. The European Union should guarantee the same rights in real life as on paper”, says Anastasia Crikley from FRA.

The usual cases of discrimination appear during education and employment. “Just having an inappropriate name may stop you from getting a job or being accepted to some school”, says FRA. Immigrants appear to be the most common victims of discrimination.

Apart from this squelching information, the studies contain positive data. The first anti discrimination laws in the EU have shown good results and there is already a noticeable decreasing of racism in Austria, Sweden and Czech Republic. Even though the EU had put a directive about principles of equal treating people regardless of their racial or ethnic group in 2000, victims of discrimination still exists because people don’t have enough cognition about their rights.
