20 year old Sophie Lancaster - girl 'goth'
20 year old Sophie Lancaster and her 21 year old boyfriend Robert Maltby were viciously attacked in the face and head to the point where it was impossible for the police to tell whether they were male or female.
Both Robert and Sophie fell into comas after the assault early on Saturday 11th August. Robert suffered bleeding on the brain but he came round from his coma and was well enough to be let out of hospital.
Sophie never came round from her coma and died on Friday 24th August.
So why were they attacked?
The families Sophie and Robert have said they already faced trouble because of being who they were - 'goths' who dressed in black, dyed their hair and had piercings.
Everybody should have the freedom to be who they want to be, look like they want to look and wear whatever they want but because of their differences, Robert and Sophie were brutally discriminated, which caused Sophie's loss of life.
Sophie had her own morals, values and her own social conscience, all taken away from her.
Two youths aged 17 and 15 have been charged and the charges are to be reviewed whilst they are still in custody.
Loss of life and battered into a coma. Loss of freedom. Why should they be victimised for their differences? This savage attack resulted in a senseless loss of an individual woman just because she wasn't the same as everybody else.
